Reform Documents

Description:

The following documents are all available to schools through CDE Press.

First Class: A Guide for Early Primary Education Preschool–Kindergarten–First Grade

This is a guide for creating early primary programs that allow children to flourish in a rich learning environment. First Class presents the principles of development-based learning and provides examples for organizing classroom, scheduling activities, and planning a challenging curriculum. CDE Press, 1999, 208 pp http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/gs/em/frstcls.asp

•Elementary Makes the Grade!

This report updates the reform document It's Elementary! and provides guidance on implementing standards-based education, offering 15 recommendations that educators can use to create a system in which standards, assessment, accountability, and curriculum are aligned and focused on ensuring that all students meet grade-level standards. CDE Press, 2000, 92 pp. http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/gs/em/emg.asp

•Taking Center Stage II: A Commitment to Standards-Based Education for California's Middle Grades Students

Twelve inter-related recommendations for ensuring success and closing the achievement gap for all of California's middle grades students form the foundation of TCSII content and serve as the organizational structure for the Web portal.

The educational strategies illustrated in the TCSII vignettes of school practices (both text and video) are parts of a comprehensive middle grades approach.  Each practice illustrates only a part of a recommendation, research study, or learning improvement at a featured school.  No single recommendation or practice alone can close the achievement gap in California's middle grades.

•Aiming High : High Schools for the 21st Century

This document is built on the legacy of Second to None, California's visionary guideline for high school reform. Aiming High is a how-to document for implementing a standards-based educational system. The document helps to place standards-based education in the context of California's accountability system that includes state standards and local outcomes. The document's focus is to guide schools in “doing the right things” and in “doing things right.” CDE Press, 2002, 184 pp. http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/gs/hs/ahgen.asp
