Strategic Teaching and Learning: Standards-Based Instruction to Promote Content Literacy in Grades Four Through Twelve

Description:
This CDE publication was designed to help address students’ needs in the upper grades and the needs of all teachers in grades four through twelve who endeavor to:

1) Help students read to learn across the curriculum and comprehend at grade level; and
2) Accelerated the development of beginning and struggling readers.

The curricular foundation of this book is the English-Language Arts Content Standards. Strategic Teaching and Learning has been reviewed for alignment with the Reading/Language Arts Framework and contains cross-references to it throughout.

The resource, which provides teachers of students in grades four through twelve with a variety of research-based, instructional strategies, was designed to be useful for instruction in the full spectrum of content areas and not exclusively for language arts instruction. These strategies can help students by providing them with the scaffolding they need to bridge the gap that often exists between their reading ability and the difficulty of the text.

The principal writers of this document are Dr. Robert Pritchard, currently a Professor of Education at CSU, Sacramento, and Beth Breneman, Language Arts Consultant, CDE.
