The watershed education program was first initiated by
a
Forks of Salmon teacher in 1993. The aim was to study the local plants, animals, and culture within the local area with an emphasis on current  conditions in the watershed. The knowledge of specialists, resource professionals, and community members was integrated into the curriculum to provide further expertise into specific subjects.  In 1998, the CA. Fish & Game began supporting the school program through the non-profit organization the Salmon River Restoration Council (SRRC).  This year, the program is supported by grants to the SRRC from the California Department of Fish and Game, and the Resource Advisory Council of the Klamath Task Force.   Junction Elementary School, another local school in the watershed, coordinates with Forks School in many events including the annual Watershed Fair in May.
All of the Watershed Education activities meet California educational standards. Guest presentations, fieldtrips, and classroom studies are planned during a teachers' summer meeting. Several curriculum meetings are held throughout the year to continue planning upcoming activities.
